Linux vs Windows

August 21, 2022 by Skyler Leave a Comment

Linux and Windows are two of the most widely used operating systems. Windows is a commercial operating system while its rival Linux is classed as an open source operating system, which can be easily altered. To discover some of the key differences between Linux and Windows, to see which operating system you may prefer to work with, simply continue reading.

Which is faster?

Linux is typically faster than Windows, which is one reason why those who have technical IT knowledge often prefer to use Linux over Windows. So if speed matters to you, it’s a wise idea to opt for Linux. One of the reasons why Linux is faster is that is has a much more simple interface and doesn’t have to run anti-viral programs in the background.

Security:

If you opt for Linux as your operating system, you’ll be in luck as Linux has a reputation for being extremely secure. This is due to the fact that as it’s open source and there are many talented developers around the world who make updates for Linux, if a threat is identified Linux’s code can easily be upgraded to prevent the potential threat. Whereas if you opt for Windows which is far more susceptible to threats such as hacks and viruses, you may need to continuously wait for new patches and updates in order to protect your PC.

The ability to customize:

While it’s illegal to make changes to Windows operating system, it’s actually legal and encouraged to make changes to Linux’s code. So if you have programming knowledge, it’s a great idea to opt for Linux. However, if you don’t have IT knowledge you may want to opt to use Windows as it’s much easier for those with little programming or IT knowledge to operate.

Low spec PCs:

If you have a low-spec PC, you’ll find that Linux will run more efficiently on your PC than on Windows.

Applications:

If you plan to download applications to your PC, beware that many applications are only designed to be compatible with Windows and so if you require many applications, it may be a wise idea to use Windows as your chosen operating system.

Gaming:

Most games are also designed to be used with Windows, so if you’re a gamer, take this into account when making your decision.

So if you’ve been wondering whether you should use Linux or Windows as your operating system, hopefully, the information above has proven useful in your decision-making process.
